Sydney took the award for the favourite city in Australia at the annual Australian Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards held last Tuesday (December 4, 2012). It beat last year’s winner Melbourne by a margin of a single vote. On the other hand Margaret River won the award for the best town in the country. The event took place at the Ivy, in Sydney, in front of more than 200 Australian travel and leisure industry professionals. The event also saw Queensland get the maximum number of awards, a total of seven. New South Wales came second with a tally of five awards.
What makes the awards special is that the assessment and the votes are cast by those who matter, the travellers, and as such is also an accurate description of what the travellers think are the best destinations in the country. As per Georgia Rickard, the editor of the Australian Traveller magazine, this should also serve as an indication of 2013’s domestic travelling trends. He also mentioned that judging the number of awards that Sydney won (five) clearly travellers preferring to come to the city admire the cosmopolitan charm that it oozes. Clearly Sydney is no longer only about its pristine beaches and the wonderful harbour that have long been the traditional attractions. Restaurants in Sydney are increasingly becoming a major attraction, luxury hotels in the city are becoming more and more popular and the chic bars in the city are garnering a following of their own.
Western Australia also had a wonderful time at the awards. Margaret River, one of the must-see destinations in Australia for wine & surf lovers, became the best town in Australia for the second year running. Readers were up in praise of its wonderful selection of restaurants, wineries which make it the wine capital of the country, art galleries, farm gates, boutique accommodations and the tremendous surf.
Kimberly also won two major awards this year. It won the awards for Australia’s Dream Destination and Best Adventure Holiday Destination in Australia.
The Readers’ Choice Awards are currently the only award in Australia that is determined by travellers. More than 1000 readers across Australia selected their favourite destinations and best experiences across 22 different categories. This huge survey conducted by the Australian Traveller Magazine lasted for more than four months. The final list of the winners, the runners-up, the nominations and a brief detail about them can all be found in the latest issue of the Australian Traveller Magazine currently on sale.
