The world’s largest hotel group in terms of number of rooms, the InterContinental Hotels Group has signed its first resort in Phuket, the InterContinental Phuket Rawai Beach Resort with the JTM (Thailand) Limited. The later is a member company of the L.C. Development Ltd (LC Dev) Group. Incidentally two more properties, the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket and the Crowne Plaza London Kensington are also owned by the LC Dev Group.
This resort has been re-designed by the internationally renowned and the award-winning architect Bill Bensley out of the older Evason Phuket and Bon Island. He also happens to be the designer of the award-winning InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam. Scheduled to be complete by 2014, this resort, which will serve as the flagship for brand InterContinental in Thailand and will have round-about 240 rooms and villas.
The property is situated at a prime location on the south-eastern Rawai beach; at just about 50 minute drive from the Phuket International Airport. Within its vast 180,000 square meters of picturesque landscaped gardens facing the waters of the Andaman Sea, the resort will offer the finest quality services to its luxury travelers in both business and leisure traveler categories. With its close proximity to the Phuket town (about 30 minutes) and the Patong beach (about 20 minutes) which is a popular nightlife hub in Phuket guests can access these attractions easily.
On the occasion of the signing, LC Dev Managing Director Kelvin Lum mentioned that the long standing relationship between IHG and LC Dev has just become stronger. The InterContinental Phuket Rawai Beach Resort, when fully operational, will become the second LC Dev hotel to be managed by IHG in Thailand after the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket in Patong. IHG’s strong presence in Thailand is the perfect credential to manage this new and important venture. Needless to say that this new understanding promises exciting times ahead and that the entire LC Dev team is anxious to see how things unfold over the next few years leading to the opening of the resort in Phuket.
Jan Smits, the CEO of IHG Asia, Middle East and Africa, added that the company had been looking for a right partner and opportunity to establish a new resort in Phuket and answer the call for a luxury resort on the island. Their already strong relationship with LC Dev was further strengthened when they agreed to sign the deal with IHG.
IHG currently has 14 resorts and hotels spread across the major destinations in Thailand, including 3 in Phuket. This includes the upcoming Holiday Inn Express Patong Beach, Holiday Inn Resort Phuket and the Holiday Inn Phuket Mai Khao.
