With six of the monasteries still standing, women had once lived in two of the structures with men occupying the other four.  Today, Metéora which translates to ‘in the heavens above’ or ‘middle of the sky’ serves as a huge tourist attraction.

This magical oasis which is over 23,000 years old, is located atop the highest rocky peaks in Greece and was once known as a religious retreat for monks.
