When you think of an island getaway, images of Spitbank Fort probably don’t spring to mind.
Located 1.5km off the Portsmouth coast, Spitbank Fort was built over 136 years ago as a gun emplacement to protect the country’s fleet in the years of Britannia rule.
During World War Two, it was almost destroyed by bombing and in 1982 all military functions stopped.
A recent total transformation has turned this war torn relic into a luxury, five star, exclusive retreat.
Spitbank Fort features nine rooms, a swimming pool and sauna (you’ll need it in winter!).
A games room, sea views and a wine cellar keep guests busy, while a retractable boat helps with quick getaways and nearby sight seeing.
Guests have recently used the venue for weddings and large gathers. But, at $9,200 per night, it’s not exactly the cheapest way to spend a weekend.
