Lord Howe Island was recently ranked as the #1 island in Australia, and the 8th best island in the South Pacific.
This ranking is according to an annual list by Trip Advisor, based on votes by millions of users, of the best island destinations in the world. The 2015 list compared more than 100 islands worldwide and presented the winners into both general and regional categories.
It came as no surprise that Bora Bora, the world-famous honeymoon destination in French Polynesia, ranked first in the South Pacific. Meanwhile, Providenciales in Turks and Caicos was named the best island in the world, closely followed by Maui in Hawaii. Two Australian islands made the top ten list of all contested islands in the South Pacific: Lorde Howe in 8th, naming it the best island in Australia, and Norfolk Island in 10th, naming it second-best.
While there are more than 8 thousand islands around the coasts of Australia, it’s not hard to understand why Lord Howe was the favorite.
Lord Howe is just a short two hour flight from the metropolitan hub of Sydney, but there’s no mobile phone service to be found on this island, making it impossible not to lose oneself in this tropical paradise.
Just 11 kilometers long, Lord Howe is a tiny island of only 250 residents and a tourist limit of 400 at any given time. These measures allow the beaches to remain clean and well preserved compared to other islands in the region. Among the most notable features of this island are its bird, marine animal and plant life, its quiet, stunning beaches and turquoise crystalline waters.
To determine the winners, TripAdvisor considered both the quantity and quality of reviews for hotels, restaurants and attractions on all islands in the contest, gathered over a one-year period.
