In keeping with the trend of servicing all elements of the market, Uber Australia has now introduced ‘Uber Select’ to riders residing in Brisbane and the Gold Coast – a service designed to cater for riders wanting a bit more luxury than an Uber X, but without forking out for an Uber Black.
The new Uber Select service will offer riders the ability to book a more premium vehicle from a selection of high-rating Uber X drivers. Some of the brands available to riders include vehicles with the following nameplates:
- Alfa Romeo
- Land Rover
- Mercedes-Benz and
Riders in Brisbane and the Gold Coast will be able to access the service by entering the promotional code ‘UBERSELECTACCESS’. This will unlock an extra slide menu to access the service.
An Uber Select priority zone has been set up within the Brisbane CBD to ensure that Uber Select drivers receive priority access to Uber Select fares over Uber X fares.
Riders will have to pay a little extra for the privilege with the minimum fare increasing from $8 to $10 and the base price rising from $2.50 to $4.00. Likewise, the price per kilometre has also increased from $1.30 to $1.80 and the price per minute also increasing from $.40 to $.55 per minute.
According to Uber, this still means that the average fare from the Brisbane CBD to the airport will be around 10 per cent cheaper than a taxi, but around 40 per cent more expensive than an Uber X.
This tension was evident in recent events in Queensland, when Uber drivers were assaulted by angry Brisbane taxi drivers for allegedly stealing their business.
Brisbane magistrates court heard Sukhcharan Singh Bal, 26, and Jaskirat Singh, 29, physically attacked two Uber drivers outside a Brisbane hotel and used the ride-sharing app to summon a third victim. The taxi drivers were granted bail on condition they surrender their passports, stay away from their alleged victims and not request or travel in an Uber car.
