Iconic Birdsville Races aims to give visitors unique outback experience

The outback Queensland is once again taking preparation for holding the annual Birdsville Races where thousands of visitors are expected to enjoy the iconic horse race.

It is expected that more than 10,000 race enthusiasts will gather at that small township of Birdsville that has a population of only 115 people.

The iconic event, which is now in its 134th year, is set to be held on September 2 & 3 this year. Visitors can expect to enjoy an outback experience like no other in one of the most isolated towns in Australia.

Birdsville Race Club’s Vice President, Gary Brook, said that the Birdsville Cup is unique because no other horse race in the world can offer the sight of a barren landscape coming to life with the thunder of horses’ hooves, plume of red dust, and colours of jockeys’ silks.

While the players will have the chance of competing in 13 races with a prize pool worth of $200,000, visitors will get to enjoy a wide variety of activities and entertainment programmes. Mr Brook said that people are likely to start arriving in town from the beginning of August and they will find pleasure not only in the horse race but also in camping in the lovely countryside, watching the yabby races, enjoying the street parties, and taking part in other events across the town.

The visitors also have the chance of winning thousands of dollars in prizes by being a part of ‘fashion on the fields’. They can compete in six categories for families, men, and women. Plus, there will be a novelty dress competition this year, which will be held on Friday, September 2.
