Olympic winner Women’s Sevens team to play in Sydney 7s

The Aussies can expect another stunning display from their Olympic heroes in the Sydney 7s this summer. It has been announced on Friday, August 26, that the Olympic Gold medal winning Australian Women’s Sevens rugby team will participate in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

The event will be held from 3-5 February 2017 at the Allianz Stadium. Stuart Ayres, the Minister for Sport, thinks it to be the most exciting event going to happen in the summer of 2017. In a press release from Destination NSW, he said that hosting a fully accredited Women’s event for the first time by featuring the Women’s Sevens team would be a great success for Sydney.

Bill Pulver, the Chief Executive Officer of Australian Rugby Union, said that the team’s performance at the Rio Olympics breathed new life into the sport and made it popular in both Australia and all across the world. He sounded excited for the team members to have the chance of displaying their skills in front of a packed crowd this summer. He hoped that the event would be able to blow away everyone coming to watch the tournament.

Sandra Chipchase, the Chief Executive Officer of Destination NSW, hoped the event to be a very successful one since it’s going to feature the game’s best female players. The inaugural Sydney 7s tournament also featured the Women’s Sevens team.

Mr Ayres said that the Sydney 7s tournament this year drew over 10,000 visitors to Sydney from in and outside Australia. Those visitors spent more than $5 million and he hoped that the number would grow next year. He said that the newfound popularity of the Women’s Sevens team would definitely attract more visitors this time.

The tickets for the tournament will be on sale from Tuesday, October 11, 2016.
