Qantas to start non-stop passenger flights from Perth to London

Australia’s flag carrier airline Qantas made the announcement of starting non-stop flights between Perth and London. It will be the first commercial passenger service to link Australia and Europe directly. Besides, the 14,466km flight will be the longest non-stop regular passenger route in the world.

Qantas expects the Boeing 787 Dreamliners to start the flights by Christmas 2017. The flights will take off 14 times per week, and it will take nearly 17 hours to reach the destination depending on weather conditions.

Alan Joyce, the Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, hoped that the Europe-bound travellers from South Australia and eastern states would appreciate the arrival of the new non-stop flights.

Mr. Joyce said that they had data showing that enthusiastic passengers from South Australia and east coast would fly to Perth domestically to take the service.

Qantas will use their existing domestic terminals in Perth for the new route. Mr. Joyce was about to sign a deal with the officials of the Perth Airport so that the transfer becomes easier for passengers arriving from Melbourne and Sydney.

The terminals also need major upgrades to serve the passengers of the new route properly. Colin Barnett, the Western Australia Premier, has already committed $14 million to the improvement of airport infrastructure.

Mr. Barnett described the new service as ‘game-changing’ and hoped that it would add an extra $9 million to $36 million into the economy of the state each year.

Perth has a large British expat community. Mr. Barnett hoped that the service would encourage them to bring more visitors to Western Australia. Besides, he also expected that more direct routes would be opened to and from other European cities.

Emirates Airlines’ 14,200km flight between Dubai and Auckland held the previous record of the longest non-stop passenger flight.
