VisitScotland reveals highlights of the 2017 Year of History, Heritage, and Archaeology


Scotland is known for its mountain wilderness specked with lakes and valleys. However, the country is most renowned for its fascinating past, and VisitScotland arranges for a range of events and activities for visitors to have a glimpse of that past.

VisitScotland, Scotland’s national tourism agency, has revealed some of the highlights of its 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. Let’s have a look:

Edinburgh Georgian Shadows, Edinburgh

The event will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Edinburgh’s New Town through a light show. The story of the town and the lives of its first inhabitants will be explored through light projections at six history-rich buildings, which are also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The month-long event will take place between February 23 and March 26.

Tradfest Edinburgh, Edinburgh

Another event in Edinburgh and this time the celebration includes music, dance, film, drama, storytelling, craft and art. The art and culture event has taken inspiration from the traditions of Beltane and May Day. The 12 days of celebration will span from April 26 to May 7.

Mary Queen of Scots Festival, Kinross and Loch Leven

The festival will commemorate the life of Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scots. Various programmes will take place including music, food, and living history encampments. It will also celebrate the heritage and rich cultural history of the Kinross area and emphasise on its connection to the Queen. The festival will take place over a weekend in September (the exact date is yet to be announced).

The year will also have a wider range of programmes to celebrate the country’s rich history. The tourism board will also organise a number of clan-related events such as Clan Hay ‘Tartan Ties’, Burnett Gathering, Clan Maclean International Gathering 2017, and more to celebrate its rich history of clans.
