Which Australian city is on your list for the next holiday? Lonely Planet publishes a list of best cities for traveling in 2018 and one particular name will give you a big surprise.
There’s lot of buzzes around Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Auckland, and many other places. It seems that Canberra, the capital city, has been sidelined for so many years. Well, until now! Lonely Planet has ranked it as the best Australian city and one of the top 10 cities in the world for travel in 2018.
Canberra has climbed to the third spot in the prestigious ‘Best in Travel — Top Cities’ list, which is the highest position ever acquired by any Australian city. Spain’s Seville claims the top spot and USA’s Detroit follows it to the second position.
Lonely Planet’s Chris Zeiher described Canberra as a ‘criminally overlooked’ city that has so much to offer in terms of excitement and x-factor. Mr Zeiher gave a nod to the city’s national treasures, unique cultural environments, gastronomic experiences, and the new precincts including Braddon and NewActon.
Mr Zeiher also pointed to the Manuka Oval – the scenic sports venue in Griffith, Canberra. It will host an international test cricket match next year. He saw it as a great occasion for cricket fans to visit the capital.
Lonely Planet publishes a number of lists each year, cataloguing the best destinations in various categories. The selections are picked on the basis of the first-hand experiences of the company’s experts and writers. They spend time in almost every destination in the world to find out the best places so that travellers get the best experiences possible.
Apart from Canberra, some other Australian places and destinations have made it to some of the Lonely Planet’s lists for 2018.
