Gold Coast receives award for the best backpacker destination

The Gold Coast is famous for sandy beaches, surfing spots, hiking trails, theme parks, and more. It’s also a great place for the backpackers. In fact, the city in Queensland has become the Best Destination for backpackers at the 11th TNT Golden Backpack Awards.

Winning the title is definitely a tremendous achievement since the competitions were the Whitsundays, Cairns, Fraser Island, Noosa, and Melbourne – some of the most favourite places among the budget travellers.

The 10-week voting period collected tens of thousands of votes from the backpackers. The voting campaign was promoted through several platforms including the offline and online versions of TNT Down Under and TNT Magazine, along with a number of social media channels.

Dean Gould, the Executive Director Corporate Affairs and Strategy of Gold Coast Tourism, said that the award indicates that the tourism industry’s focus on the youth market is the right strategy. He also took it as a sign that the young travellers showing appreciation to their progressive tourism strategies and marketing.

The Gold Coast tourism sector heavily relies on young international travellers. According to Mr Gould, foreign visitors aged between 15 and 29 account for almost 30% of all the international travellers to this region.

The international backpackers travelling to Gold Coast not only stay longer but also are more active in seeking local immersive activities than the regular vacationers. The tourism industry has also taken initiatives for their young travellers because they are the ones who will become tomorrow’s business and family travellers.

Gold Coast Tourism has signed a partnership with Hostelworld. It is world’s largest hostel booking online. It also operates world’s first Sand Hostel in Broadbeach.

The Golden Backpack Awards gave awards in 37 categories. It recognised the best services in various sectors including tour operator, best hostel, best indigenous experience, and more.
